2 days prior. Saturday, the last day of my registration tag. I went Valvoline to get an emission inspection. I mentioned to them that I had a check engine light. They suggested that I get the check engine light issue fixed and even OBD scanned so I can have the codes to take to the auto shop.

At a Chevy dealership service department I mentioned to them that my Equinox engine light had 2 codes P0010 and P0442. I told them that I did my research on the codes potential problems and I know the price of the combined parts and labor both high end and low end price range. I left that dealership when they called out a very sketchy price for a procedure my Equinox did not need.

Enter Century Automotive & Transmission.
I was greeted by the owner Mike Kurtz (apologies Mike for mistaking you as Terry) He listened to my situation and have my my Equinox diagnosed. Mind you diagnostic fee I was already willing to pay (my due diligence price was very fair) so NO question on that.

The diagnosis pertaining to the codes were spot on per my research as did the parts and labor. I asked Mike if my Equinox needed to replace the EVAP Canister, he nope. That was the part and labor that I balked at the Chevy dealership.

Since I saved on the parts and labor, I went ahead and to get a tune up, spark plugs, tranny fluid change, AC Freon top off, oil change, Engine de-carbon. Mike ran through each item (price and labor) that needed to be done on the Equinox with me. The price came out to nowhere near what the dealership said.

To be fair the dealership incident was towards the end of the day Saturday (05.31.2025) and they could not diagnose anymore vehicle and can do it Monday. What soured me was their attitude just for asking questions.

Diagnosing took an hour. Mike already set that expectation before performing the diagnostic. I said I will wait for the diagnosis and that the coffee and restroom will get me through the wait. And during the repair they offered to take me home and pick me up when the repair was done.

Repair duration was also set prior to diagnosing and they exceeded my expectation by getting done the same day.

To the trolls - yes it can be done in a few hours but since its a family owned business and seeing the number of customers, I set my expectation for the following day.

Mike and Terry emphasize to me that I needed to run my Equinox 30 to 40 miles at the very least before getting my emission inspection to reset all the sensors. I ran 52 miles and I passed emissions test. The following day I got registration tag/sticker.

Mike and his Crew earned my business that day. Terry even recommended a body shop for a future fix on my RAV4.

Comment : The Service Staff is Conversational and Informative. Terry is especially pleasant. They are very demonstrably deeply knowledgeable about your car as a whole. When they presented an unexpected issue with my vehicle to me when I'd come in for an oil change, there was an issue with my break fluids, they took the time to explain it to me and arm me with the information I needed to make a call. They also demonstrated that it was a real issue in need of repair(showed me what the fluid should look like versus what it did look like), instead of using the tactics I'm familiar with most mechanic shops implementing to drive sales. Parker, my technician, lead with value first, and because of that I will be entrusting them with my repeat business from now on because that approach is rare in the industry.
